First news from Rwanda

Hi everybody!

I’ll be writing in english from now on, as I only have access to a qwerty laptop…

So, where to begin? I suppose I can tell you a bit about our flight from Rome to Kigali. We were meant to leave on wednesday, one o’clock in the morning, and get to Kigali at 11. Well, that was the plan anyway. What happened in the end was that we left at one in the morning, and arrived at five in the afternoon. We sort of got a bit delayed.

The airline had to change our plane in Adis Ababa and it took them three or four hours. The flight was scheduled to take the following route: Kigali, Bujumbura, and back to Kigali. Being late, we skipped the first stop in Kigali, and ended up in Bujumbura, main airport of Burundi. The security of the country being as it is (phase 3 and 4 for the UN, out of a maximum of 5 – Rwanda is phase 0) we where quite happy to stay on the plain until it took off again…

And so we finally arrived in Kigali, on the same flight as the Rwanda national football team, with the camera and the reporter and the welcome comittee (not for us, for the team). We were then taken to our first hotel, Jambo guesthouse, a nice although very basic place in which we spent three nights.

Kigali is a very expensive place to live, three nights in the guesthouse, breakfast included, cost us 90 euros each. But it was a nice place to get to know the area, starting off with Chez Lando, the local hangout, and finishing with the Republika Lounge, which will very probably become our personal hangout for the months to come. The food is so good, and the view…

So after these first nights, we moved to another place, much cheaper, the Centre Christus, and wow, was that a change from the first guesthouse! Let’s just say we’re eager to find our own house…

Apart from that, the city of Kigali is great, I love it! People everywhere, really very nice, and very nice landscapes, cafes, restaurants. We also visited a local market, and the smells and colours are just overpowering (in a good way).

I’ve probably forgtotten lots of stuff, but I’ll try and wright again shortly (but the connection isn’t good). Photos will come whith a better connection, so that means not to soon… But believe me, it’s just great!

See you soon! For those of you who know me, I miss you and hope to get news from you soon!

Well, there must have been a noticeable (and understandable) increase in the heartbeat when the pilot announced you were touching down in Burundi (I hear Kroll rate it 8.5 on 0-8). The restos/cafes sound great – tell us more – how’s the beer (and do they have JD?). It sounds a really nice place. How’s work? Good luck with finding somewhere nice to live.
